Wildlife & Biodiversity
Observing and monitoring the species that share the woodland, season by season.
The woodland contains old trees, river bank, patches of woodland with wild flowers, open areas for butterflies, wild overgrown parts and accessible plantations of hazel and basket willow coppice.
Wildlife includes fox, badger, roe deer, weasels, voles, bats and many birds, from the joyful chiffchaff to sparrow-hawks and owls.
There is a detailed management plan for the woodland which lays out the patchwork of habitats. Woodland edges are the best for wildlife and we have plenty of edges! As well as the wildflower meadow, the far end of the main field is an open area of long grass and plants which is good for butterflies – have a wander round on a sunny afternoon in summer. The lower, sloping wet field has several springs and we ask people to avoid this area with dogs to avoid disturbance.

Moth trapping next July! See Events

Our river bank is popular with badgers and foxes, as it is hard to access. Along the river, kingfishers perch on branches to fish and have nested.

We have planted over 40 species of tree, including many less common locally such as aspen, bird cherry (left) and field maple. We are making a tree trail for spring 2026.
